Advanced Airfield Degradation Analysis

We are also advancing into environmental sustainability practices to understand and forecast airfield surface/subsurface degradation, by evaluating:

  • 1. Vegetation encroachment, that can attract birds and other animals – potentially increasing the risk of bird strikes. It can obscure runway lines, signs and lights. Dry vegetation can be a fire hazard near jet blast zones. Vegetation roots can intrude into pavements, accelerating runway degradation.
  • 2. Moisture and water retention, that can promote plant growth, can cause asphalt binders to detach from aggregate, freeze-thaw cycles can cause pavement cracks or subsurface erosion. It can reduce load bearing capability of the pavement and can cause rapid deterioration.
  • 3. Surface temperature and heat variations, that can introduce localized thermal stress and fatigue zones, leading to structural deformation and faults. It can soften the surface leading to texture loss and reduce load resistance and can oxidise binders – making asphalt brittle.

We provide actionable insights into runway wear patterns, helping airside operations teams plan targeted maintenance, avoid unscheduled closures, and extend the lifespan of the runway infrastructure. Other application areas of our technology include roadways, racetracks, and helipad surfaces.
